What is Polygon, simply?
Polygon exists to make Ethereum cheaper and faster to use. Ethereum can only process a limited number of transactions at a time, and when demand rises the fees rise with it — sometimes to the point where a small transaction costs more than the amount being sent.
Polygon runs as a separate, faster network alongside Ethereum. Transactions happen there for a fraction of the cost, and the results are periodically settled back to Ethereum itself. You get most of Ethereum's security guarantees while paying far less per transaction.
POL is the token used to pay those fees and to secure the network. It was previously called MATIC; the rename to POL is one of the more confusing recent changes in crypto, and you will still see both names used.
A simple way to picture it
An express lane built beside a congested motorway. Same destination, far less queuing, and the traffic records are handed back to the main road periodically.
Should POL be your first crypto?
Not usually. Polygon is genuinely useful infrastructure, but its value is tied to how much people use Ethereum applications — a bet on an ecosystem rather than on something simple. There is also a practical trap: sending POL to an exchange on the wrong network is a very common way for beginners to lose funds permanently.
If you do buy POL, store it safely
Crypto left on an exchange is held by that exchange, not by you. For anything you would mind losing, move it to a wallet whose keys you control, and write the recovery phrase on paper — never in a photo, a notes app or an email. No exchange, wallet, support agent or website, including this one, will ever need your seed phrase. Anyone who asks for it is stealing from you.

Is POL the same as MATIC?
Yes. MATIC was renamed POL as part of a wider upgrade. Older articles, exchanges and wallets may still show the old ticker, which causes a lot of avoidable confusion.
Why are fees so much lower than Ethereum?
Because transactions are processed on Polygon's own network rather than directly on Ethereum, and only summarised results are settled back. Less work on the expensive network means a lower cost per transaction.
Can I send POL to any wallet address?
Only if that address is expecting it on the right network. Sending funds on Polygon to an address that only accepts Ethereum — or the reverse — is one of the most common ways people lose crypto for good.
