What "gas" actually is
Every action on the Ethereum network — sending a coin, swapping one token for another, minting something — takes computing work from the computers that run the network, and that work has a cost. "Gas" is the name for that cost. You are not paying a company; you are paying the network itself, split among the people running it.
The fee is priced in gwei, a tiny fraction of one ETH (one gwei is a billionth of an ether), and it moves with demand. When lots of people are using the network at once, fees rise, in the same way a taxi costs more on a Saturday night than a quiet Tuesday morning. There is no way to "shop around" for a cheaper network — you can only wait for a quieter moment or accept the current price.
Beginner mistakes this number prevents
A common beginner scare is sending a small amount and watching the fee eat a large share of it. That is a real risk, not a myth: sending $10 of a token when fees are high can genuinely cost several dollars in gas. Before you send anything, glance at this page or your wallet's own estimate, and if the fee looks disproportionate to the amount, it usually makes sense to wait. Fees are almost always lower outside of peak US and European daytime hours.
