What is Algorand, simply?
Algorand is a blockchain designed to settle transactions quickly and permanently, without the long confirmation waits that Bitcoin requires.
On Bitcoin, a transaction becomes progressively more certain as blocks are added on top of it, which is why exchanges wait for several confirmations. Algorand instead finalises transactions in seconds, and once final they cannot be reversed or reorganised.
It achieves this by picking a small random committee to validate each block, rather than having every participant compete or vote on everything. The selection is random and secret until the moment it happens, which makes it difficult to target the validators in advance. ALGO is used to pay fees, which are very low, and to participate in securing the network.
A simple way to picture it
A randomly drawn jury rather than a full public referendum. A handful of people decide, they are not known in advance, and the verdict is final immediately.
Should ALGO be your first crypto?
No. Fast finality is a genuine technical strength, but a beginner's decision should not rest on consensus mechanisms. Plenty of technically capable chains have not attracted lasting use, and that is the thing that actually matters.
If you do buy ALGO, store it safely
Crypto left on an exchange is held by that exchange, not by you. For anything you would mind losing, move it to a wallet whose keys you control, and write the recovery phrase on paper — never in a photo, a notes app or an email. No exchange, wallet, support agent or website, including this one, will ever need your seed phrase. Anyone who asks for it is stealing from you.

What does "final" mean here?
That once a transaction is confirmed, it cannot be undone by a later reorganisation of the chain. On some networks recent transactions can in principle be reversed; on Algorand they cannot.
Why are fees so low?
The design does not require competing computation, and the fee is a small fixed amount rather than an auction for limited block space.
Is the random committee a weakness?
It is the core of the design, and the security case rests on selection being unpredictable and unbiddable. That is a cryptographic argument rather than an obvious one, and it is fair to say it depends on assumptions holding.
