Filecoin price history
Past prices tell you what already happened. They are not a forecast, and crypto has no obligation to repeat itself.
What is Filecoin, simply?
Filecoin is a marketplace for file storage. People with spare disk space rent it out; people who need storage pay for it, and the network checks the files are really being kept.
The interesting part is the proof. Paying a stranger to store your data is only useful if you can verify they are actually doing it, so Filecoin requires storage providers to continuously prove they still hold the exact data they agreed to. Failing those proofs costs them money they have staked as a guarantee.
FIL is used to pay for storage and to back those guarantees. It is aimed at large-scale archival storage rather than at replacing consumer cloud services — it is not a Dropbox substitute.
A simple way to picture it
A self-storage business where the operator must open the unit on demand and show your boxes are still inside, or forfeit a deposit.
Should FIL be your first crypto?
No. Its value depends on demand for decentralised storage, a market that is still developing and competes with very cheap, very established cloud providers.
If you do buy FIL, store it safely
Crypto left on an exchange is held by that exchange, not by you. For anything you would mind losing, move it to a wallet whose keys you control, and write the recovery phrase on paper — never in a photo, a notes app or an email. No exchange, wallet, support agent or website, including this one, will ever need your seed phrase. Anyone who asks for it is stealing from you.
Filecoin questions beginners ask
Is it a replacement for cloud storage?
Not for everyday use. It targets large archival datasets and applications wanting storage not controlled by one company. For ordinary file syncing, mainstream services are cheaper and simpler.
How do I know my files are really stored?
Providers must repeatedly produce cryptographic proofs that they still hold the specific data. Failing them costs the provider staked collateral.
Can anyone read what I store?
The network does not encrypt for you. Anything confidential should be encrypted before you upload it — an important detail that is easy to miss.
